John Cariani has found himself in a hit. One of the co-stars of Broadway’s “Something Rotten” talked to FN about what he’s been up to since landing the role of Nigel Bottom in the hit Broadway musical, which is up for 10 Tony Awards Sunday.
The show follows brothers Nigel and Nick Bottom as they try to write a show better than Shakespeare. Their result: the first musical.
“It’s about the most fun on a job I’ve ever had. I’ve never experienced anything like it,” Cariani said.
When Cariani isn’t on stage, he’s working on a new staging of the play he penned called “Almost, Maine.” His show “Love/Sick” finished an off-Broadway run earlier this spring, and a few years back he was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in “Fiddler on the Roof.”
Pre-Show Routine? “Before the show I’ll go in and stretch out and really only get ready about five minutes to places. I don’t want to go and stress too much about it.”
Person You Most Want In the Front Row? “Well I would have picked Little Big Town, because I’m a huge fan, but they were in the front row the other night. They came backstage and performed for us a bit. They were so nice and complimenting the show and I was complimenting them and it was just one big love fest. But since they’ve been, I’d love Shakespeare to see this and see what he thinks.”
Show You’d Most Want to Be In? “‘The Qualms’ by Bruce Norris. I love his plays. They’re funny and biting and smart.”
3 Week Vacation: Where Do You Go? “I think I’d go somewhere tropical. A couple years ago I’d have said Norway, Iceland or Banff–I’m from Maine–but my manager is in Tulum right now and it looks beautiful, and I think the Caribbean would be cool.”
Favorite TV Show? “I love ‘The Americans.’ I love the suspense and Kerri Russell is great too.”
Big Fashion Trend You Tried and Failed? “Well, I guess my big fail, I’m told, is how I dress now in New York. I wear a lot of hiking clothes around, you know the Keen shoes and the windproof pants and bug repellant button down shirts? My co-star Kate Reinders is always asking me if I’m going hiking.”
Go-To Shoe Store? “REI over on Lafayette.”
Post-Show Routine? “Well because ‘I’m in a hit’ I have a lot of friends and family backstage coming to see me, so that’s what I do after the show a lot. I do give lots of behind the scenes tours too which I love.”
Plans for the Tony Awards? “Well we have the day off and there will be a big cast party and the nominees will go to the awards and hopefully it all turns out!”
