Christmas is kicking off in New York and Saks Fifth Avenue was the latest department store to unveil its store windows last night.
Saks always hosts a major event when it comes to revealing its holiday windows, and this year was no different. The entire façade of the iconic flagship store (which also is right across the street from the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree on Fifth Avenue) has been transformed into the “Winter Palace.”
Last night the Oratorio Society of New York and the Cathedral Choristers of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine sang carols and unveiled a major light show as a part of the display. The windows themselves are dreamy images put together from various areas of the holiday palace. Along Fifth Avenue shoppers will see scenes from the palace including the banquet, which comes complete with winter creatures, icy interiors and some Snow Queen worthy fashions.
The store also pays homage to other iconic “palaces” and landmarks, from the Taj Mahal in India, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Colosseum in Rome.
The entire production required 10,000 hours of work and includes over 225,000 individual lights.
