FN Spy: Shoe Insiders Talk Movies & Comic Book Inspirations

Awards Circuit

The race is on. With awards season right around the corner, films are fiercely competing for Golden Globe and Academy Award nods. Joe Zee, editor-in-chief of Yahoo Style, already has his eye on one flick: “A Most Violent Year.” “It [looks] amazing, “ he told Spy. “It’s set in the 1980s, and Jessica Chastain is wearing Armani. It’s such a flashback in time and a great fashion movie, too.”

If Superwoman wore designer heels, Ruthie Davis would be her girl. The designer was inspired by classic comic book heroines for her pre-fall ’15 collection, showing skyscraper-heeled boots and sneakers with neon heart and star appliqués. Davis also added children’s footwear to the collection for the first time, including a tot-sized smiley-face sneaker. “I didn’t want to modify the design of the sneaker, just scale it down,” said the designer. As for her holiday plans, Davis said she is trading her signature heels for, yes, flip-flops. “I’m going to Tulum, [Mexico], for a week,” Davis said. “I don’t even think I’ll bring heels!”

Quote of the Week:

Tony Hsieh on the movie he’s excited about: “‘Pitch Perfect 2,’ and I’m not afraid to admit it,” said the Zappos CEO.
