First it was sweatpants. Now it’s Crocs. Orange Crocs, to be precise.
Eva Mendes, the actress and former Reebok brand ambassador, created a fashion firestorm this week. In an interview with “Extra,” the new mom warned women that dressed-down, weekend-wear attire could potentially hurt relationships.
“You can’t do sweatpants. No,” said Mendes, who is in a relationship with actor Ryan Gosling. “Ladies, the No. 1 cause of divorce in America? Sweatpants. No. Can’t do that.”
Not surprisingly, there was an immediate backlash. Many viewers took to Twitter to declaim their unwavering love of sweatpants — while still loving their spouses.
A day later, Mendes back-peddled, turning her criticism to a footwear brand that has long been ridiculed for its styling.
Mendes posted a pair of one of her favorite, well-worn looks on Instagram, hinting that her comments were intended to be nothing more than a joke.
“Dear favorite pair of sweatpants. I was just kidding when I said you’re the No. 1 cause of divorce. Everyone knows that orange crocs are the No. 1 cause of divorce. Either way it was a bad joke and I feel terrible if you or anyone thought I was serious. Thanks for understanding sweatpants. Sorry orange crocs.”
While she took a shot at the Niwot, Colo.-based clog maker, FN has no doubt that Mendes looks stylish in whatever she wears.
