“Spring ’15 has two of my favorite shoes I’ve ever done. They are truly my babies, and I really believe in them,” said Sam Edelman. “One of the shoes is really taking bohemian to the next level, and the second shoe is whimsical and exciting.”
The designer was on hand at Lord & Taylor last week, mingling with consumers and signing shoes. As part of the event, both the Edelman and Lord & Taylor teams each donated $2,500 to the Harlem Children’s Zone. And being with his customers had him reminiscing about one particularly memorable meet-and-greet.
“One of the great stories is the girl who asked me to tattoo her arm with the name Sam Edelman. It’s kind of a secret if I did it or not,” he quipped.
Up next, Edelman will jet set off with wife Libby and son Jesse. “We are headed to Europe in two weeks for our second spring trip. From there to the South of France, off to Ibiza, Spain and then London and then home,” he said. “And we will be in Nantucket for 4th of July weekend.”
Here, Edelman kicks off FN’s new designer series and answers our 3 questions.
1. How many pairs do you personally own?
“The truth? I always have between 15 to 20 pairs in my closet, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t bought 150 in the past two years. I wear blue shoes, yellow shoes and walk around Palm Beach in yellow loafers. Tonight I’m wearing black pony sneakers. I always try to find my shoes in different out of the way places. I [covet] very small Italian brands, French brands, English brands, and brands by young designers. That’s what I wear most of the time.”
2. Heels or flats?
“If a woman can wear flats, I love flats. I’m a flats guy. I like heels as well, but if a woman can wear flats, that’s great.”
3. If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?
“I would be a ballerina because the ballerina shoes brought such happiness to so many peoples’ lives.”
