Pharrell Williams Admits He Almost Bought Birkenstocks

Pharrell Williams appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” Wednesday night to talk “The Voice” and the environment. Yes, the list of titles goes on for this year’s CFDA Fashion Icon winner. From producer singer to designer and dad, Williams can add environmentalist to his list of titles.

Although Williams does his part for the environment, he told Fallon, he’s not a “tree hugger.” The “Blurred Lines” singer poked a little fun at the stereotype of a “tree hugger.” “I almost bought some Birkenstocks … so close, so close. And I like trail mix,” he laughed.

Williams did get serious on the topic and said, “I love those people, because you know what? They love the Earth more than we do. And my only thing is, I’m not going to do that because I do do things that are not necessarily positive for our environment. We all do. But if we all were just to think about it a little bit and just take these little steps, then regular people like us can contribute as well.”

Williams does more than contribute. He is creative director of Live Earth Road to Paris, a global series of events over 24 hours anchored from Paris and New York that features over 100 bands and will be broadcast across all major media platforms. The event is meant to bring a billion voices together to shine a global spotlight on the 192 nations convening in Paris this year. The aim is to deliver the message to take climate action now.

He is also involved in RAW for the Oceans, an initiative that recycles ocean plastic into G-Star collections co-designed by Williams in partnership with Bionic Yarn, where he is also creative director.

It seems like Birkenstocks may well be the right pair of shoes for the artist.

In the meantime, Williams has 50 colors of Adidas Superstars to choose from.
