Jay Ellis, star of BET’s “The Game,” is a self-proclaimed sneakerhead, but he’s not sure he’ll be rocking Kanye West’s Yeezy Boost 350 sneakers anytime soon. Though the actor and former model likes Adidas Superstars and Stan Smiths, “I’m just not an Adidas dude,” he told FN at amfAR’s generationCURE event in NYC last week.
Ellis does have a pair of West’s Nike Air Yeezy Red Octobers, which he’s worn only once. “If somebody steps on them, I’m going to be angry. I also feel like they are a classic, so if I hold onto them long enough, they might pay for my kids’ college,” he laughed.
He said he’s more of a Nike fan, with Jordan kicks topping his favorites. “I got 3s, I got 10s, I got 11s, I got 9s, 13s,” he listed. “I’m kind of a Nike-head.”
When it comes to wearing sneakers with suits, Ellis supports the trend, but “only if you have swag.” “If you feel weird about it, you shouldn’t do it,” he continued. “There’s some false-confidence guys out there, so maybe you should ask somebody first, and then once you get the sign off — preferably from a girl with a strong opinion — then you should do it.”
Here, Ellis answers the FN 3:
1. How many pairs do you personally own?
“I just moved, and in each of two closets, I probably have 50,60 pairs — so around 120. I feel embarrassed, though. Do you really need that many shoes?”
2. Heels or flats on a woman?
“Flats, because I’m super-tall. I like to know how tall a girl really is. Heels throw me off. I like to know.”
3. If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?
“I’d be a YSL sneaker. I have these all-white YSL high-tops that I absolutely love. And I’ve probably worn them too much. I feel like you can wear them with anything.”
