Rodarte’s founders and designers, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, are reimagining Superga’s classic low and high-top styles in novelty material mixes that include denim with a net overlay and styles featuring contrasting tongues in snake prints and embossed leathers.
“We are inspired by Superga’s iconic look and by taking that recognizable message and putting it in new context — one that conceptually explored innovative and interesting textures and fabrications,” said the design duo. “We built a world inspired by netting stamped leathers and surfaces. This allowed for us to keep the meaning of the Superga classic line, and yet, bring our point of view to the design.”
Rodarte is known for its collection of modern, feminine looks with a California vibe. The sister design team has won the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Fashion, among others. Their work is also featured in the permanent collections of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The designers are also well known for designing the costumes in the 2010 film, “Black Swan.”
To convey the spirit of the collection, a companion marketing campaign including a short film available on Youtube, was photographed by Colin Dodgson that features actress and screenwriter Gia Coppola, granddaughter of director Francis Ford Coppola. The film, directed by Ryan Reichenfeld, features Coppola exploring a Los Angeles estate.
Behind the Superga brand is licensee Steven Madden Ltd., known for other trend-driven brands that include Steve Madden, Brian Atwood, Stevies and Betsey Johnson.
The collection, which retails from $239 to $259, is available at the Superga store in New York and Superga-USA.com.
