The news of Raf Simon’s seemingly sudden departure at Christian Dior has sent a jolt through the fashion industry today.
After a tenure lasting just 3.5 years, the designer and executives at LVMH were unable to agree on a new contract. Insiders are also suggesting that Simons was being pushed to take over the men’s collection of Dior as well. This wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. After all, he is considered a true innovator in the menswear space under his own eponymous label, which will continue.
What is coming to an end is the elegant frisson and energy Simons brought to Christian Dior. Nowhere was this more felt that the game-changing footwear. From the first ready-to-wear show’s curved heel, asymmetrical vamp pointed pump to this fall’s cage and lucite heel boots and the most recent runway’s draped patent mules, the house took on a new relevance through statement-making shoes.
Early on, Simons enlisted the help of footwear designer Francesco Russo to lead the charge. Together, they always surprised on the shoe front with such memorable moments as couture sneakers, techno-trainer soled pumps and even catwalk flip flops.
