Creative or kooky? The line is often divisive at runway shows, and the fall ’15 presentations did not disappoint. Designers offered up much debatable footwear this season, with styles ranging from shaggy fur boots to space-age stilettos.
In a crammed fashion month of back-to-back shows, designers are feeling pressure to be memorable more than ever before. As a result, footwear is more daring, whereas traditionally it served as more of a complementary finishing touch to the ready-to-wear. That’s no longer the case.
Hard-to-forget styles included the shaggy shoes at Gucci, where the fur skimmed the floor as models walked down the runway. Alexander Wang took combat boots to the extreme with flatform soles that, to its benefit, could serve a serious calf workout. Over at Gareth Pugh, rubber boots were amplified via straight-cut waders that could keep one dry in even the most severe flood.
While provocative, some of the most outlandish footwear also proved to be the most thoughtful. At Christian Dior, thigh-high latex boots were a continuation of the label’s couture presentation, updated with lucite heels and contrasting prints.
