With the men’s market continuing to expand rapidly, the challenge is finding footwear that is both memorable and non-derivative of other brands. Cue Achilles Ion Gabriel.
The Paris-based, Finland-born designer, who launched his label in 2013, recently debuted his spring ’16 collection. Ranging from $297 to $715, all of the shoes are produced in Portugal.
Gabriel’s latest offering has a strong sneaker focus, with detailing like Velcro strapping and color pops in tangerine and coral blue. There was also experimentation in both dress and boot styles, with the same color-blocking seen on the vamps or side panels.
The collection was largely inspired by the late artist Anne Truitt, who was known for her vertical wooden block sculptures painted in graphic, contrasting hues.
The brand, which also offers the styles in women’s sizing, is currently carried at specialty retailers, including Dover Street Market and The Corner, as well as The Broken Arm in Paris and LN-CC in London.
