Their suede-like high-tech materials can be found tricking out the interiors of planes, yachts and automobiles. And now, Italian textile firm Alcantara is collaborating with a host of local talents, including Nicolò Beretta of luxury women’s footwear brand Giannico.
The young Milanese wünderkind has created a pointed bootie in two colorways. Retailing at €550, it is currently for sale at Alcantara’s specialty store in the fashion capital, open till September. A portion of proceeds from sales will go towards IEO Foundation’s cancer research program.
The bright Mohawk-fringed styled was inspired by both western films and Wes Anderson, Beretta told us. “Alcantara is an important name in the luxury and fashion industry,” he says.
Even so, I had never heard of them and I suspect I’m not the only fashion insider who is unfamiliar with the company. But with other collaborators including MSGM’s Massimo Giorgetti, No. 21’s Alessandro Dell ‘Acqua and Paula Cademartori, partnering with buzzy labels might just change all that.
FN asked Beretta about this new collaboration, here’s what he had to say:
What inspired your designs for this project?
I’ve been really obsessed by Wes Anderson lately so when they asked me to create a shoe in Alcantara with fringes I imagined a “Wild West” movie directed by him.
He never made this sort of movie, but if he had done it I’m pretty sure those shoes would fit perfectly the main female character.
Why did you want to take part in this collaboration?
It is a great honour to have been selected by such a big company, Alcantara works with some of the worlds biggest luxury brands and not only in fashion. For exhample Ferrari and Maserati use ofter this material for the interiors of their cars.
Also the great opportunity is to be exposed in their new temporary store in the golden square in Milan next to some other great italian designer names that have been chosen like me for this event.
What are the advantages of working with Alancantra’s materials?
It certainly is a very dynamic material, you can do almost everything wth it, there are no limits to creativity!
