There was a whole lot going on at last night’s annual spectacle, the MTV Video Music Awards. From Kanye West’s presidential ambitions to Nicki Minaj’s public — or publicity driven — feud with host Miley Cyrus, fashion didn’t get a whole lot of face time during the show, even though it usually does.
That is, unless you count the endless costume and undergarment (or lack of) changes by Cyrus.
Unfortunately, the stars who stepped up to the fashion footwear plate were fewer this year than we’ve seen in years past. We were missing the drama of Lady Gaga and her Alexander McQueen armadillo boots or Beyonce’s leggy looks.
Taylor Swift and her girl-power squad dominated when it came to best dressed, although if we’re being honest, none of the looks felt particularly memorable — Swift was by far the standout. Maybe that was the case because we were all distracted by Kanye West showing up in a new version of the Yeezy, or Miley Cyrus’s glaring silver thigh-high boots, made custom by Versace.
Despite the documented curation of the night’s fashion by Jeremy Scott, we still felt overall disappointment. There were just a few standout winners in the footwear category, and we’re emphasizing footwear here…not the whole look.
Here are our top shoe moments of the night.
