They say clothes make the man. But in George Clooney’s case, the man makes the clothes.
Last night, Hollywood heavyweight Clooney, who took home the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 2015 Cecil B. De Mille Award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment, did just that in his Giorgio Armani wedding tuxedo.
While Clooney may have chosen to cut costs on his own wardrobe for the Golden Globes — perhaps after spending nearly $5 million on his over-the-top wedding in Italy — there was no skimping on his wife’s gown. Amal Clooney, who is known for her elegant sense of style, was at her husband’s side decked out in a sleek black one-shoulder creation by Dior, with the designer’s footwear as well.
Clooney seemed even more proud of having won his wife’s heart than the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille award, named in honor of the legendary Hollywood filmmaker. In his acceptance speech, Clooney said he’d waited 53 years to meet his soul mate.
It was the first awards ceremony the couple has attended since tying the knot. As the awards season continues, it’s likely we’ll see more knockout evening wear on the new Mrs. Clooney.
Perhaps designers such as Alexander McQueen, Giambattista Vallil and Stella McCartney — among the names Amal wore during her wedding weekend — could show up on the red carpet in weeks to come.
In true awards style, politics figured into the evening. Clooney referenced the international march in Paris earlier that day after terrorist violence rocked the city, bringing a round of applause from the audience.
Could it have been a show of solidarity on the part of the high-profile couple that Mrs. Clooney chose to wear a gown by iconic French designer Dior, or was it merely coincidence?
