Hot off the news that Brother Vellies footwear designer Aurora James is one of three winners of the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund last night, the official after-party saw the fashion crowd let loose in celebration of this year’s nominees.
Held at the Sixty SoHo hotel, the party was hosted by last year’s winner, Paul Andrew, as well as Ryan Roche and Eva Fehren (both runner-ups). The night celebrated the three winning designers: James, Jonathan Simkhai and Rio Uribe of Gypsy Sport—a first-ever tie for the annual competition.
“It’s surreal,” James said. “I’ve been nervous all day, and I’m still in shock.” The designer wore her own spring ’16 springbok clogs to the after-party, while Zendaya wore the designer’s fur-trimmed sandals earlier on the awards red carpet.
“[Aurora] has a very strong aesthetic, and we liked her business model of being a social entrepreneur,” said Steven Kolb, president of the CFDA.
Brother Vellies’ footwear is sustainability-focused and produced in Kenya, South Africa and Morocco. James was named one of Footwear News‘ 20 emerging designers back in June, and will receive the 2015 Vivian Infantino Emerging Talent award at the 29th annual FN Achievement Awards, on Dec. 2.
Host Andrew was happy to see another footwear designer take home the prize this year. “I’m so thrilled to see another shoe designer take the top honors,” said Andrew. “With the fashion industry putting more and more emphasis on emerging brands, both at retail and in editorial, the awards proved that the footwear industry is a vital part of that emerging talent in the U.S.”
Other notable attendees at the party included Christian Louboutin, Diane von Furstenberg, Zachary Quinto, Misha Nonoo, Prabal Gurung, George Esquivel, Tanya Taylor and Reed Krakoff, to name just a few.
