FN Platform: NPD Group’s 2014 Footwear Industry Review

NPD Group has the answers to your questions about 2014 footwear statistics.

At FN Platform, Beth Goldstein, executive director and industry analyst for The NPD Group Inc., presented a plethora of information — from holiday takeaways to the most important shoe categories and the top-performing brands to watch.

Here, FN presents the highlights, with perhaps a few lessons for the present year.

•  “Consumers continue to gravitate to active apparel, even if they aren’t hitting the gym.”

•  “Milennials accounted for almost three-quarters of 2014 growth in the fashion-footwear market. The other quarter came from boomers.”

•  “Almost 25 percent of fashion-footwear sales are now generated online. Of these sales, 55 percent are generated by retailers that also have a brick-and-mortar presence. The convergence of the brick-and-mortar and online worlds continues.”

•  “The online fashion business grew 9 percent in 2014.”

•  “Approximately one-quarter of men’s and women’s fashion-footwear sales are now done online.”

•  “Almost all of the growth in 2014 was attributed to boots. We are essentially seeing the boots business make or break a year.”

•  “We have a new category that started trending for the year: spring boots.”

Biggest Holiday Themes:

•  Calendar shift: Consumers are shopping a couple of days before Thanksgiving

•  Self-gifting

•  Omnichannel focus: online and mobile

•  Lack of newness and innovation in shoes
