Time magazine released its annual 100 Most Influential People list, and no surprise, some of fashion’s biggest (and most controversial) faces make an appearance.
Boundary-pushing designer Alexander Wang was honored as one of the top artists of the year. Karlie Kloss contributed his entry, writing: “The trick to his success isn’t just raw talent and a dedicated work ethic but his unique ability to make high fashion ubiquitous. The core of his empire is built on the fact that he loves his work and relishes his industry.”
No question, Wang is one of the most powerful people in fashion right now. His collections are among the most hotly anticipated, and after just a few years in the industry, he’s the creative director of legendary fashion house Balenciaga.
Diane von Furstenberg was named one of the icons of the year. In her decades-long fashion career from model to designer, von Furstenberg has established herself as a person (and brand) for the everywoman and a sage and shrewd businesswoman in an industry that is still surprisingly male-dominated. “But let’s not forget: She made her own destiny. She is, and has proudly been, a working woman and mother,” wrote actress and entrepreneur Jessica Alba.
The always controversial Kanye West was also named an icon. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, wrote that it is West’s “tenacity” that has gotten him where he is today.
It was tenacity and creative vision that took West to Fashion Week this past February to introduce his first footwear collection, the Yeezy Boosts from Adidas.
Whether you’re into the hype or not, influence is something that follows the Wests wherever they go.
