Obit: Mark Lemond, 59

Mark Lemond, the longtime head of Evansville, Ind.-based Shoe Carnival Inc., died Tuesday at home. He was 59.

Lemond was initially hired as the retail chain’s CFO, rose to CEO and ultimately worked at the company for 25 years.

Among his professional achievements, Lemond played a pivotal role in Shoe Carnival’s risk-averse growth strategy. In a 2010 Footwear News interview, he said one of the company’s secrets to success was its presence in strip malls, as well as its knack for identifying new trends.

In October 2012, Lemond announced in a statement that he would step down from his post, due to health reasons and a desire to be with his family.

Lemond is survived by son Morgan Lemond of Evansville, parents James and Evelyn Lemond of Evansville, two sisters, a brother, former wife Sharon Lemond, a stepson and several nieces and nephews.
