Julian Hakes is taking a page from comic books.
The London-based designer recently teamed up with Disney’s Marvel Entertainment LLC to produce a superhero-worthy women’s sandal inspired by the film “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which hits theaters next month.
Featuring a sawtooth sole and aluminum star-shaped heel (a nod to Steve Rogers’ iconic “vibranium” shield), the style is dubbed Black Widow, after the code name for character Natasha Romanoff. “These shoes are awesome because there are [few other] female fashion items connected with Marvel,” Hakes told Spy.
And the Black Widow, which will be available at retail in spring ’15, isn’t Hakes’ first Marvel undertaking. The designer also created looks based on “Iron Man 3” and “Thor: The Dark World” in previous seasons.
Beyond the big screen, his eponymous label also is expanding into new constructions: wedges, mid-heels and a bootie lined with a removable neoprene sock. Plus, Hakes is exploring new prints, including a floral motif inspired by a recent trip to Japan.
