FN Spy: Ancient Greek Sandals in NYC

Christina Martini was readjusting to an empire state of mind last week.

“I haven’t been to New York for four years — since I had my babies,” shared the Ancient Greek designer, who was in town for a preview at Soho House with her co-founder, Nikolas Minoglu.

After stints in Paris crafting footwear for Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton, Martini now calls the Greek island of Corfu home since launching the label in 2012. “It was a bit of a culture shock in the beginning,” she said of island life. “But I wanted to do my own thing, and when I met Nikolas, we both had the same idea for the brand.”

The partnership has been fruitful, with the Athens-based Minoglu overseeing business and production from a workshop in the city. Martini crafts twists on Greek classics for retail partners such as Modaoperandi.com and Netaporter.com, with whom the brand just collaborated on three exclusive styles.

At the preview, she had on a pair of Valentino block-heel boots fit for pounding the pavement. “My favorite thing to do here in New York is visit the museums. I love The Met,” the designer said, citing classical works and artifacts as constant sources of inspiration. “Back home, I visit the Museum of Acropolis. Some of our sandals are original statue styles. Around me in Greece, the inspiration is unlimited.”
