After weeks of hype and solid on-field appearances, Johnny Manziel made his debut as starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 14. Though his arm let him down during the crushing loss, there was no denying that his neon orange Nike cleats stole the show.
Expectations were high after April’s NFL Draft, but Johnny Football’s performance was less than memorable as his team flopped against the Cincinnati Bengals. The 30-0 shutout was a big disappointment for they buzzy QB,who has been a nationwide phenomenon — thanks to outspoken social media accounts and high-profile friendships, including a close bond with rapper Drake.
Despite throwing two interceptions, being sacked four times and completing 10-of-18 passes for only 80 yards, Manziel’s shoes were one positive note in the lackluster performance. They’re bright, brash and youthful — just like their owner. We’re just hoping they will lead him to more red zone success in future games.
Sunday’s loss was a harsh blow from an intrastate rival, and it took the wind out of Manziel’s sails.
“I’m not using the rookie excuse — it’s not me,” Manziel explained in a post-game press conference, as reported by Cleveland.com. “Yeah, I’m a rookie, but that’s out the window. I needed to play better. It’s a first start, and we move on from here in the next two games and year. In the next two games, our offense needs to get better, and build something for us — some momentum for us — in the off-season and into next season.”
The former Texas A&M star may have struggled, but his signature orange Nike cleats definitely helped him with quick movement on the field. They were also hard to miss against the turf, which is appropriate for a player of his fame.
Manziel is expected to start on Dec. 21 against the Carolina Panthers, and we’re sure his kicks will look fresh!
