Birkenstock and Concepts Debut Collaboration

Birkenstock is keeping the cool factor going this season, thanks to a design collaboration with Concepts, a Cambridge, Mass.-based retailer. The limited-edition, co-branded collection will debut in-store on Dec. 20 as well as online at Cncpts.com and retail for $160.

The design teams at Birkenstock and Concepts shared in the collection’s creation based on the brand’s iconic Boston clog, recognized as a favorite among comfort seekers as well as today’s young hipsters.

According to Deon Point, GMM for Concepts, the store approached the German comfort brand about doing a project together. “I’m familiar with [the brand], and our designers wore them growing up,” he said. “It seemed like a natural progression for us.” He noted, however, that the store typically aligns itself with sneaker brands for such collaborations. “While we thought this is a little off the beaten path [product-wise], we knew our customer would gravitate toward it.”

The unisex collection includes two styles — a natural leather version that over time gently conforms to the shape of the foot, and one in bright orange felt. Both sport a fresh white outsole and contrasting brass buckle for adjustability.

“This partnership will allow us to put our own unique spin on an iconic style,” said Tarek Hassan, co-owner of Concepts, whose store is recognized among trendsetters for its exclusive products. He also noted, it’s part of the retailer’s new emphasis on women’s looks. “Most of our [past] collaborations, we’ve focused on men’s. We’re now paying attention to women as well.”
