John Varvatos is heading to the Motor City.
The Detroit native announced plans for a 4,000-sq.-ft. store located in the downtown neighborhood of his hometown, slated to open in spring ’15.
It’s a bold statement on the part of Varvatos, whose arrival will be one of the first for a luxury label in Detroit in recent years. The city has struggled to retain key businesses and revive its image after filing for bankruptcy in 2011.
“For me, this is much more than a business opportunity. It is also about changing the complexion of a great city and creating a different kind of legacy,” Varvatos said in a statement. “Detroit is well past its tipping point, and I’m thrilled to be playing a role in the city’s ongoing transformation.”
The store will carry the designer’s menswear line, as well as the Star USA range and Converse by John Varvatos collection.
Varvatos partnered on the store opening with Bedrock Real Estate, owned by Dan Gilbert, the founder of Quicken Loans. Gilbert is moving many of his businesses to Detroit’s central downtown area to help brighten the economy and has recruited other captains of industry to invest in the city as well.
