FN Spy the Magazine: Trend Watch

Major retailers shared their predictions about the key trends for fall ’14:

“Gray footwear dominates the season — pumps, booties and boots are saturated in shades of pearl, dove and charcoal. The d’Orsay pump is an important trend and extends designers’ interest in a ladylike sensibility. Global influences give a multicultural attitude with color, texture and pattern, often with fringe details. Single-sole shoes and boots and booties continue to be the important silhouette.”
— Ken Downing, SVP & fashion director, Neiman Marcus

“The trend we are most excited about is the range of novelty booties, which we believe will replace the pump. We also are excited about the reintroduction of the platform. Our customers have been asking for more options. [Regarding key colors, we’ll see] an otherwise dark color palette of Bordeaux, navy, forest green and black being brought to life with printed calf hair and embellishments such as crystals, grommets, fringe and fur.”
— Elizabeth Kanfer, senior fashion director of accessories, Saks Fifth Avenue

“Booties, from sexy cut-out styles to cool urban Chelsea boots, continue to be very strong. The pointy pump is still strong, with exciting incarnations of d’Orsays, T-straps and asymmetrical lines that feel modern and fresh.”
— Tracy Margolies, SVP & GMM of beauty, contemporary 5F, footwear & handbags, Bergdorf Goodman

“For women, we’re seeing mules with ankle straps, d’Orsay flats, mid-calf boots, super-high over-the-knee boots and booties in all heel heights. For men, there are a lot of cowboy heels and Wild West influences and a continuing hybrid of the chunky trainer and shoe. For kids, we’re seeing high-top sneakers for boys and girls and camo prints.”
— Eileen Tetreault, director of fashion strategy, Zappos.com
