The Deckers Outdoor Corp. stock has been on a bumpy ride the last few years, but in recent quarters the footwear firm has pleased shareholders and seen its Ugg Australia brand flying off shelves.
Much of that good news is a result of savvy strategies enacted by company Chairman, President and CEO Angel Martinez. So in early December, Footwear News Executive Editor Neil Weilheimer made a trip to Central California to find out how he’s pushing the firm forward — and unexpectedly got a ride in the exec’s Porsche to the site of the new company headquarters.
In the course of their very candid conversation, Martinez delved into a range of topics, including the importance of innovation and smart merchandising, his plans for the recently acquired Hoka One One brand, and the short-term views of the public markets. “I understand Wall Street has their job and I have my job. My job is to prove them wrong,” he said.
