Black Swan apparel has met its match in footwear.
Z Supply Inc., the parent company of the contemporary label, launched a shoe subsidiary, QBZ Footwear, early this year. Under that division, it debuted Rowan Reed by Black Swan for fall ’14.
The smoking slippers, oxfords, booties and pumps reflect the apparel line’s dreamy, art-inspired vibe with details such as photorealistic floral prints, wooden beads, chunky rubber soles and embossed metallics. Retailing for $80 to $250, the collection has been picked up for its inaugural season by Anthropologie and other independent boutiques across the country. The label also is targeting some larger retailers that carry Black Swan clothing, such as Nordstrom.
Rowan Reed designer Haiau Tran said the footwear line is aimed at 18- to 35-year-old women. “[The overall look] embraces opposing elements,” Tran added, noting that the Black Swan customer tends to pair understated outfits with bolder footwear. “The aesthetic is independently chic and unabashedly creative, taking style cues from the classics while incorporating them on independent terms.”
QBZ has more shoe plans on the horizon for 2015, including a diffusion line called R.E.E.D.
Greg Garrett, a partner at Z Supply, pointed out that the goal of that collection is to create additional wholesale opportunities. “Offering a smaller, eclectic [mix], R.E.E.D. will expand our distribution to many of the accounts that carry other Z Supply brands, as well as to many of the specialty shoe chains,” he said.
As for the main Rowan Reed line, fall items such as boots, slingbacks, mules and flats have garnered a positive reaction from buyers, according to Garrett. “For spring ’15, we look forward to offering sandals, espadrilles and more,” he said.
