Monday night’s red carpet boasted all variation of punk- (and not-so-punk) inspired looks to celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibit entitled “Punk: Chaos to Couture,” officially opening on May 9.
Many of fashion’s finest — and plenty of starlets — experimented with the theme, donning slashed and studded looks with touches of tartan. The best footwear looks adopted studs and safety pin embellishments, while leather fringe and tartan made a strong showing on custom shoe styles by Brian Atwood and Christian Louboutin.
Madonna and Debbie Harry, unsurprisingly, relished in the punk vibe, while Queen Bey (an honorary chair of the gala) did not disappoint, either, opting for a custom Givenchy get-up that included opera-length gloves and a mega-train, in addition to matching thigh-high boots with rear corset. Her fellow co-chairs included Rooney Mara and Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, as well as Anna Wintour and Moda Operandi founder Lauren Santo Domingo.
