Carlos Gavilanes, a sales clerk at a Nordstrom store, died on July 27. He was 33.
Gavilanes was the victim of a stray gunshot in Hialeah, Fla., a suburb of Miami.
“Carlos had a great spirit,” said Marcelo Gavilanes, the victim’s uncle. “He was a hard worker and would always do whatever it would take. He treated everyone the same, no matter who they were, and was always smiling.”
Gavilanes is widely remembered as a family man and dedicated shoe industry worker. He started as a representative at Olem shoes before moving to work for Dollhouse Footwear and Lilita. In the past year, he also had traveled to China to learn the shoe production process so he and his father could launch a shoe business together. Gavilanes had also taken a job with Nordstrom working as a shoe salesman to better understand customer service and the customer experience.
“He had a positive way of thinking about things,” said Carlos Gavilanes Sr. “We are going to go forward with this line for Carlos. He started it. He kept it going. But we’re going to be missing such an unbelievable person.”
Gavilanes is survived by his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer Kharrazian, and two children, Carlos, 9, and Victoria, 2.
