FN Spy: Madden’s Tweet Talk… Coco Rocha Hearts Dannijo

Steve Says
Steve Madden has joined the Twitterati. The founder and chief creative officer of his eponymous brand talked to Spy about social networking through his personal handle, @StevenMadden. “I’m a little impulsive, so I have to be careful,” Madden joked, while chatting backstage at the Deap Vally concert last week at The Box in New York, the second event this year for the Steve Madden Music series. “It reminds me that my sense of humor isn’t funny all the time.” So who are some of Madden’s favorite Twitterers? “I follow a lot of left wingers,” he said, adding that comedians Steve Martin and Sarah Silverman are also on the top of his list. “[Sarah] is so funny. I love her.”

“Watching Barack is like watching Jordan drive to the hoop.”

“Jay-Z rapped about me once — his career has never been the same.”

“It’s better to understand than to be understood.”

Model Friendship

Dannijo recently announced it intends to expand into footwear, and Coco Rocha could be an early adopter of the shoe styles. The supermodel is a self-proclaimed fan of the jewelry label — not to mention the designers behind it, Jodie and Danielle Snyder. “We’ve been friends for about a year,” Rocha said. “Jewelry can be kind of traditional, and people seem to always wear the same thing, but they get it right by making statement pieces. And I have to say, they are the sweetest girls. I [wear Dannijo designs because] I think models should always be faces for companies they like. If I have a great relationship with you, I want to show the world what you do.”

Social Circle

Roger Vivier brand ambassador Inès de la Fressange is racking up more fans for the label, thanks to her social media know-how. “I opened the Twitter account for Roger Vivier and in just one day we had 1,000 followers. Can you imagine?” she said. “It’s really quick and fun. There are all kinds of people to [interact with]: actors, singers, unknown people or [authors like] Joyce Carol Oates and even the Pope. I follow President Barack Obama, although he doesn’t follow me … yet.”

Mad Dash

Ready, set, shop. About 600 women braved the rainstorm last week to score some coveted Manolo Blahniks at the label’s sample sale at The Warwick Hotel in New York. Shopper Tina Zuberi walked away with four pairs, but she said it took some time to hit the jackpot. “I love [styles adorned with crystals], but I had to dig to find them,” she said. Vera Hung, who purchased three pairs, was among the first group of shoppers who entered at 9 a.m. “They let in about 100 women at a time,” she said. While many consumers endured a longer wait in the rain, they were impressed with the selection of classic looks on display. “They are classy, elegant and tasteful,” Dema Shamoon said of the collection.

Hawaii Rules
The summer sun is shining on Edmundo Castillo. The designer is planning a Hawaiian vacation with friends in August, and he said the group is taking relaxation seriously — absolutely no work allowed. “It has been three or four years since I’ve done Hawaii this way,” Castillo said. “We don’t worry about anything besides shedding off the stress. No fashion magazines, no fashion anything for three weeks.” But when the designer returns to New York, it’ll be back to business even before he exits the airport. “You rush to the newsstands to see all the September issues.”

What’s Cooking

Mario Batali has a full plate. The superstar chef is juggling a handful of projects, including running his string of restaurants, appearing on “The Chew” and serving as brand ambassador for Crocs. But Batali still fits in relaxation time with his loved ones. Up next is a trip to the family’s Michigan retreat, where he plans to learn how to stand-up paddleboard. “My kids already know how,” Batali said at a recent cookbook signing at Crocs’ New York flagship. But his two sons are taking some lessons from him, too. In fact, they are launching their own cookbook this month: “The Batali Brothers Cookbook.”
