Cappie Pondexter loves more than just basketball. The WNBA champ, Olympic gold-medalist and star player for the New York Liberty also has a passion for fashion. “I love that you can express your personality and who you are through what you wear,” Pondexter said. “It’s definitely an industry I want to be in when I’m done playing.” The pro-baller already has a jump start: In 2010, she co-founded 4 Season Style Management, a consulting firm that specializes in fashion styling, personal shopping and image management. “I knew how hard it is for athletes to find clothes that fit and still look stylish,” Pondexter said about starting the company, which boasts clients from the WNBA and the National Football League. “We’re managing a lot more people now, and it’s bigger than we had imagined.” Here, the all-star talks about her favorite shoe trend, cities to shop and how she gets ready for game day.
Pre-game ritual: “Take a nap, wake up, shower and then listen to music.”
Hot shoe trend of the moment: “Wedge sneakers.”
Earliest fashion memory: “When I was really crazy about wearing Tommy Hilfiger and Iceberg back in high school.”
Workout soundtrack: “I need fast-paced music to keep me going, whether it’s alternative, dubstep, electronic or rap. It’s pretty much a blend of everything.”
Favorite shopping city: Prague. “It has every store, and I just enjoy the city because there’s a lot of energy. I also love Istanbul in Turkey.”
Travel must: “Headphones.”
Best way to relax after a tough game: “Go out to dinner with close friends and talk, drink wine and just relax. Good ambiance and nice food is always the best.”
