For 40 years, The Tannery has continued to expand, evolve and reap the rewards of being one of the country’s premier independent retailers.

1973: Sam Hassan bows The Tannery in Cambridge, Mass.

1975: A second store opens in Boston.

Early 1980s: Tarek and Talal Hassan join the company.

1992: Footwear News names The Tannery as Independent Retailer of the Year.

1996: Concepts debuts inside The Tannery as a store-within-a-store.

The retailer produces its first collaboration with Clarks Originals x Concepts.

2001: The company’s e-commerce site launches.

2003: FN names The Tannery as Independent Retailer of the Year for the second time.

2008: A standalone Concepts store bows at 37 Brattle St.

The new Tannery shop opens at 39 Brattle St.

The Hassans create a retail space dubbed Curated by The Tannery.

The Nike x Concepts “Red Lobster” collaboration proves to be a huge success, selling out 1,400 pairs in three hours.

2009: A three-story, 21,000- sq.-ft. flagship debuts at 711 Boylston St.

2010: For the third time, FN names The Tannery as Independent Retailer of the Year.

2011: Concepts launches an online sales site.

Curated by The Tannery unveils its own e-commerce site.

The Wilderness Workshop shop-in-shop debuts e-commerce.

The Concepts x New Balance collaboration sells 800 pairs within three hours

2013: The Tannery celebrates 40 years in business.

All the company’s websites are slated for a redesign and relaunch later this year.

Firm plans new collaborations with Asics, Arc’Teryx, Clarks, New Balance, Nike, Red Wing, Canada Goose, North Face, Converse and Vans.
