Trade Show Planner: 1H 2013 Calendar

As the fall ’13 buying season gets under way, trade show organizers are stepping up their efforts to attract attendees. Some are expanding categories and revamping formats, while others are rolling out robust digital tools and beefing up seminar offerings to help showgoers make the most of their experience. Here, Footwear News compiles the events, both domestic and international, slated for the first half of the year.

Hosting 12 shows annually, Capsule will feature footwear brands including SeaVees, Grenson, Yuketen, Dr. Martens and Clae. Above Tree Line, an outdoor-focused show within the show that launched last year, will return. In addition, Capsule’s cash-and-carry program, designed to help retailers diversify their offerings, will expand to include a record shop, bookstore and selection of locally made products.

Bread & Butter

A major repositioning of Bread & Butter will see the show’s brand roster trimmed by more than 100 exhibitors. The layout also will receive an overhaul, with some concept areas merged or eliminated and several new areas added, including Upper Street and Urban Fashion.

Following Advanstar Global’s acquisition of ENK International, changes are afoot at Project. This month, the ENKNYC men’s show will be folded into the Project New York event. In February, ENK Vegas will transfer all its men’s brands to Project Las Vegas, while Project Las Vegas will move its women’s brands to ENK Vegas. Additionally, Project Las Vegas will continue to highlight dual-gender brands. In addition, Magic’s Street and S.L.A.T.E. shows will be combined to make way for the new Project MVMNT, focused on youth culture. The Tents @ Project, an event dedicated to high-end designer and directional brands will also debut at the Vegas show.

The streetwear and action-sports show will mark its 10th year with an expanded footwear offering and a series of anniversary parties.

Outdoor Retailer

OR’s winter market will shift to a Wednesday-to-Saturday schedule to let retailers get back to their stores for part of the weekend. The show’s Outdoor University @ OR seminar lineup will feature topics including “Born in the USA: Why Manufacturing’s Return to America is Critical to Your Business;” “Protecting Your Brand on the Web and in Social Media;” and “The Outdoor Recreation Retail Store: Liability Issues.” (See page 23 for more details on the show.)

Buyers shopping Magic can maximize and extend their experience using Advanstar’s new digital platform, Shopthefloor.com. Operating 30 days prior and 30 days after each Magic show, the service will allow vendors and buyers to plan, place and track orders with one another through private online showrooms. To allow consumer engagement, each vendor also will oversee a public page on the site.

Continuing to round out its offering, FN Platform will expand its Black Diamond designer area, focused on emerging talent and product priced at more than $300. The show’s international profile will grow significantly with the addition of two areas: Micam at FN Platform, featuring more than 20 Italian companies; and a small collection of Peruvian brands. In addition, the British Footwear Association’s “British Invasion” section and the Japanese Pavilion will return. A jam-packed event calendar will include seminars presented by the AAFA, USRA, FDRA, Sterne Agee and Modern Pulse, along with a “Vintage Vegas”-themed opening-night party. Other highlights are a cocktail party hosted by Two Ten Footwear Foundation and a trend presentation and cocktail event sponsored by ANCI, the Italian footwear manufacturers association.

The Atlanta Shoe Market

Time-pressed buyers will benefit from extended hours at the upcoming February edition of The Atlanta Shoe Market. To keep pace with the show’s growth, additional exhibitor space has been staked out in the permanent mall stores and food court area on the convention center’s lower level.
