Authentic Brands Group is moving further into footwear with the addition of Marilyn Monroe shoes.
The New York-based brand development company — which owns the rights to the Marilyn Monroe estate and currently licenses the name for apparel, accessories and other products — recently inked a deal with Will Rich Shoe Co. LLC to add the category.
The offerings, which retail from $39 to $79, are set to hit retail in September for holiday ’13.
“Footwear was an obvious extension [for the Marilyn Monroe label],” said Nick Woodhouse, president and chief marketing officer for Authentic Brands. “It’s a great complement to an already-strong, $400 million business at retail.”
Woodhouse noted the collection will span a wide array footwear silhouettes, including flats, pumps, booties and boots. “Marilyn is fun and flirty, but she’s also glamorous and sophisticated,” he told Footwear News. “It’s a little bit of both and it will touch on everything.”
The announcement comes on the heels of Authentic Brands’ acquisition of women’s labels Taryn Rose and Adrienne Vittadini, which it purchased from Schottenstein Luxury Group in January. Headquartered in Hayward, Calif., Will Rich Shoe is also the footwear licensee for those brands.
Will Rich Shoe President and CEO Rich Brandt said the Marilyn Monroe line will honor the screen siren’s signature style while encompassing contemporary looks.
“[When looking at any current trend], we found an actual picture of Marilyn wearing it [in the 1950s and ’60s],” he said, noting that Hollywood, athletic, Western, military and knitwear elements play into the debut collection, which is targeting department stores such as Nordstrom, Macy’s, Belk and Dillard’s. “It’s amazing the different worlds that she lived in.”
