Dee Hilfiger ramps up her collection for the HSN family with a major brand expansion.
Deesigns, which already offered handbags, will debut footwear and outerwear on Sept. 25. The shoe mix includes everything from wedges and pumps to boots and flats and features a variety of materials and prints such as plaid, metallic, leather and faux ostrich.
“I love shoes. I learned a lot about the different styles and constructions,” said Hilfiger. “I tried to design shoes that were on trend, but not trendy. They are classic and don’t break the bank. They can be worn all day and night.”
Hilfiger added that her target customer is a 20- to 45-year-old woman. Prices range from $80 to $190.
“The team at HSN helped me come up with [looks] that are affordable yet luxurious and can fit across the board,” she said. “I started with the shoes and designed bags and coats to coordinate.”
Here, Hilfiger sounds off on advice from her famous husband, Tommy, and a few surprises along the way.
1. What inspired this collection?
DH: I turned to my own closet. I took the types of shoes I like to wear and tweaked them. I have the whole gamut, from Top Shop to Christian Louboutin. Interestingly enough, the shoes I wear the most are ballet flats and loafers.
2. Did you turn to your husband for advice?
DH: [Tommy] always offers his advice, whether solicited or unsolicited. He never steers me wrong, though. It’s always helpful, especially for a new shoe designer.
3. What surprised you most about footwear design?
DH: I didn’t realize how many materials can be used to make shoes. I assumed you just make shoes out of leather, but that was the interesting part for me — [learning that] you can use various materials.
