Happy New Year
New year, new you. Industry players are getting ready for 2013 and writing their resolutions. For Edmundo Castillo, it’s about staying grounded — literally. “I want to travel less,” said the designer, who will visit Italy, Spain and Puerto Rico before his resolution kicks into gear. “I want to come back home to New York and be part of this fashion community.” Castillo also is expecting 2013 to be a good year. “My birthday is April 13, and 13 is my lucky number,” he quipped. Meanwhile, Alexandre Birman is keeping his goals simple. “Health and good inspirations [are my goals],” the designer said. Sportie LA co-owner Isack Fadlon is putting wellness on his list for the new year. “I’d like to ride a bike to the gym — once I join one,” he joked. Jimmy Choo USA President Brian Henke is thinking about his relationships. “I want to take more time for friends,” he said of his personal goals for 2013. And for Monique Lhuillier, it’s all about being efficient. “My resolution is to be more organized,” the designer told Spy. “There’s always so much going on.”
It’s time for more girl talk. The second season of HBO’s “Girls” kicks off next month, and what’s a female-driven TV show without great footwear? “We’re going to continue with some of the things we started [in season 1]. You’ll see a lot of flats and Bass loafers on Hannah [played by Lena Dunham],” said costume designer Jenn Rogien. “And Shoshanna [Zosia Mamet] will wear shoes with pops of color — lots of pink.” More high-end brands could make the cut, too, including a pair from Rogien’s own closet. “I may have shared a Givenchy look with a guest star next season,” she hinted. And all in all, Rogien bets big on footwear for the show. “I really feel like shoes affect how an actor stands, how they feel and how they walk. Even if you don’t see it on the screen, it’s a big part of the character and it really helps us find their footing.” Pun intended, of course.
Pentland Brands Plc knows how to throw a party. The British footwear giant toasted its 80th anniversary earlier this month at London’s famed Abbey Road studios — a place that holds special meaning for the firm. “My parents founded Pentland in Liverpool in 1932, and when we [went public] in 1964, our acronym was ‘Beatle Boots.’ Our traditional product was the pointed-toe, three- and four-inch stilettos worn by so many Beatle groupies,” Stephen Rubin, the family’s fearless leader, said during his speech at the event. “Today, as a privately owned, third-generation family business, we are [classified] as the U.K.’s 25th-largest private [company].” It was fitting, then, that a number of big footwear names flew across the pond for the bash, including Brown Shoe Co.’s Diane Sullivan, Zappos.com’s Fred Mossler and Steve Hill, and Pentland’s own Sonny Shar.
Speaking of big bashes, Mossler and fiancée Meghan Boyd have been busy planning a celebration of their own — their wedding. The pair were set to tie the knot at Robert Redford’s Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah, over the weekend. “It’s our tradition to spend the holidays in Park City, so we thought this would be a cool location,” said the bride, who was anticipating some wedding-day surprises. “Tony [Hsieh] and Steve [Hill] are the best men, so I’m sure they have something up their sleeves.” The generous couple asked guests to contribute to their favorite charity, the Goodie Two Shoes Foundation, which annually provides 10,000 needy children in southern Nevada with new shoes and socks.
Edoardo Caovilla is prepping for a big year. While his family’s brand gears up for its 80th anniversary in 2014, the son of Renè Caovilla is expecting a son of his own in March. Caovilla told Spy the baby (his third child) will be named Renè to carry on the tradition. “If he is passionate about the shoes, that will be fantastic and he can carry on the business,” he said. “Shoes are in our DNA.”
Victor Cruz knows a thing or two about crosstown rivalries. The New York Giant, whose team contends with the New York Jets, weighed in on the new metropolitan competition brewing between the NBA’s New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets. “It’s tough because I’m cool with Jay-Z and I like the new look the Nets have,” Cruz told Spy, “but I have to go with the Knicks because J.R. Smith is my boy and he’s a great player.” Cruz, who’s been friends with Smith since high school, added that he’s been trying to put off an invitation from the hoops star for a game of one-on-one. “I’ve got to take him up on it sooner or later,” Cruz joked.

Lenay Dunn has a cosmopolitan sense of style. The songstress, MTV personality and face of American Rag for Macy’s turns to international sources for wardrobe inspiration. “I really like [fashion writer and former Harper’s Bazaar Russia editor] Miroslava Duma. I follow her Instagram feed and I love her fashion and the blogs that feature her,” Dunn said at a recent American Rag preview in New York. “As far as stage style, Selena Gomez always has really cute dresses. Those two are on total opposite ends of the spectrum, but they hit it right on. I love rocker-inspired looks and anything that’s fun and girly and cute.” So what’s the budding singer-songwriter’s own favorite concert footwear? “I haven’t really taken my performance out of the living room yet, but when I do, cowgirl boots will be a must,” she said. “I would totally rock those.”
