Bloomingdale’s Kevin Harter’s Good Taste

After 23 years at Bloomingdale’s, Kevin Harter still knows how to keep things fresh. “I’m the luckiest guy in the world to have this job,” said the VP of men’s fashion direction for the retailer. “The industry is always changing and there are always new trends, so every season my job seems new to me.” Another cause for excitement has been footwear, he added. Last month, the New York flagship opened a men’s-only Louis Vuitton shop with a significant shoe presentation. And for spring, the department store will introduce Gucci, Church’s and Rivieras men’s shoes. “Bloomingdale’s knows [men’s footwear is] a priority, and we’re looking at redesigning floors based on the strength of the business,” said Harter. “We’re bringing in new resources, and we’re marketing it differently.” Here, the executive shares a few of his favorite things and how he manages to get in some quality time with his five-month-old twin boys.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

“A big cattle rancher. [I’m an] Iowa boy, and my grandparents were farmers.”

Most important style rule:

“Make sure it’s a good fit. I’m all about finding a good tailor and making sure clothes fit.”

Style icon:
“I like old Hollywood — the classic Paul Newman from the 1960s.”

Morning or night person?

“I am now a morning person. I get up at 5:30 in the morning so I can hang out with my kids a little bit before work.”

In-flight necessities:
“I need my iPad, a good book and a warm blanket.”

Favorite TV show?

“I don’t watch much TV, but I always have one HBO obsession. Currently, it’s ‘Game of Thrones’. Oh, and ‘Downton Abbey.’ It’s coming back in January. That’s how obsessed I am — I already know.”
