Spring ’13: The Top 10 Craziest Runway Shoes

Designers went wild on the accessories front this season, and shoes made many of the biggest statements. Although some may question how to wear them, these were undoubtedly the most buzzed about shoes for spring.

Perhaps the most outlandish of all were the Celine runway shoes, on which Phoebe Philo let loose with furry “Big Bird” pumps, pedicure peds and trompe l’oeil barefoot pumps.

In Milan, Prada and SW1 were the talk of the town, and both collections virtually dismantled the standard definition of a shoe. Miuccia Prada sent leather sock-boots down the runway, with and without Geisha-like carved platforms strapped on top. And Stuart Weitzman and Alvaro Gonzalez at SW1 debuted the “shank-less shoe,” claiming the silhouette’s unique engineering actually enhances comfort.

Brits Charlotte Olympia Dellal and Sarah Burton both got cheeky with overtly thematic collections, the former showing poodle-heel sandals and the latter with honeycomb-sculpted acrylic wedges.

Alexander Wang’s glow-in-the-dark sandals with knee-high garter straps also stuck out for their inherent innovation.

While the verdict is still out on the commercial viability of these wild styles, each has undeniably brought fun back to the footwear arena.
