Pegasus Footwear Opens Children’s Shop

Comfort retailer Pegasus Footwear of New Paltz, N.Y., has made a move into the kids’ arena.

The new 675-sq.-ft. Pegasus Kids Shoes, located adjacent to its existing location, features children’s brands Stride Rite, See Kai Run, Chooze and Zooligans, in addition to kids’ collections from adult brands Keen, Merrell, Ugg Australia, Dansko and New Balance.

According to owner Len Sapiro, the shop is expected to generate 10 percent to 15 percent of Pegasus’ overall sales, which consist of business from the main New Paltz store and a sister location in nearby Woodstock, N.Y.

Sapiro said his decision to launch a kids’ door was spurred by increased competition for Pegasus Footwear’s 13-year-old online business (formerly Pegasusfootwear.com and now Clogworld.com, specializing in clogs and Ugg boots). So when the space adjacent to his existing location unexpectedly became available, Sapiro took a chance.

“Pegasus Footwear in New Paltz has grown every year since we opened 14 years ago,” said Sapiro. “And there’s virtually no other kids’ [shoe] store anywhere near [here].”

Sapiro took just 30 days to get the store up and running. “The biggest learning curve for me was the sizing of the shoes,” he said. “It’s much more difficult than adult sizing. There doesn’t seem to be any bell curve.”
