Christian Louboutin is setting up shop in India.
The brand plans to open its first India boutique in early 2012, inside New Delhi’s gilded DLF Emporio luxury mall. Louboutin teamed up with longtime collaborator Eric Clough of New York-based design firm 212 Box to conceptualize the 700-sq.-ft. retail space, which will carry both men’s and women’s footwear and handbags.
While the footwear industry has targeted India as one of the next “it” markets for high-end labels, Louboutin COO Alexis Mourot said the brand’s attraction to the area goes beyond the hype.
“Most luxury brands would say that India has great potential, and whilst we agree with this statement, the reality for us is the love that Christian has for India,” the COO said. “Christian has visited India every year for a very long time, looking for inspiration or working with [master embroiderer] Jean-Francois Lesage and his atelier, with whom we create a beautiful embroidery range. India’s culture and traditions have always been very important in Christian’s life, so it is natural to open a store in the country.”
Mourot also noted that the brand expects to open more locations in India in the future.
