Designers Ready for Oscars

Designers are dishing on their favorite films of the year, but are tight-lipped about their own Oscar-night surprises.

Stuart Weitzman said he is rooting for “The Social Network” to win the top honor on Sunday, and for Natalie Portman, and Colin Firth to win the top acting awards. And though he said he thinks this awards show would see lots of ornate crystal embellishments on shoes, he was mum about what he had planned, and who would wear his famous one-of-a-kind Oscar designs down the red carpet. “Wouldn’t you like to know?” he joked. “It is always an honor for a celebrity to select your shoes when they are given the opportunity to choose amongst the entire industry.”

Jimmy Choo founder and chief creative officer Tamara Mellon said red carpet looks are part of the brand’s DNA, but she won’t know until the big night what celebs chose to strut in her styles. “I’d love to see Natalie Portman, who is divine, [in our shoes],” she said, of the Best Actress nominee. “There are a lot of great women [nominated], and we always get a lot of nominees and presenters [in our looks]. We’ve had great luck in the past.” As for Mellon’s Best Picture pick, the honor is up in the air. “I like ‘Black Swan,’ and I love ‘The Fighter.’ There are so many great films [this year],” she said.

Giuseppe Zanotti, however, is a little more superstitious when it comes to predicting both award winners and who will wear his shoes on the red carpet. “It’s bad luck when you say it,” the designer told Footwear News at the opening night party for his new Beverly Hills boutique on Feb. 4. “All the girls I see, I would like to see them in my shoes. I do my best to have nice shoes for all the girls of the world, and the ones on the red carpet.” Still, Zanotti confessed he does have a surprise shoe that he designed specifically for the event. He wouldn’t offer up the details, only saying that it’s built on a 15-centimeter heel and will be worn by an Oscar nominee.
