Patricia Field Dishes On Sex And The City

“Sex and the City 2” continues to gain momentum, with the premiere less than two weeks away. To celebrate, costume designer Patricia Field welcomed a select group of editors to her New York studio on Wednesday to talk about her styling methods and secrets from the set.

“The movie is more about the whole [clothing] ensemble,” she said. “In the first movie, it was about the studded belt and the gladiator sandals. In [the second] movie, it is more about the clothing and whatever shoe works.”

A costuming veteran, Field admitted she was “frightened” about the flashback 1980s scene — in which Sarah Jessica Parker wears white pumps by Brian Atwood — noting that if it wasn’t done well, it might have looked ridiculous to have 40- and 50-year-old women playing their younger selves in ’80s attire. “[But] I saw the movie and it worked. … Thank God,” she said.

Viewers can also expect a repeat outfit. The newspaper-print dress designed by John Galliano for Christian Dior that was worn during a TV episode will be reprised on the big screen. “There is a reason. It’s in the plotline,” Field said, although she remained quiet on further details.

The designer also unveiled her newest product for Payless ShoeSource on Wednesday. A four-leaf clover charm necklace is now available for $13 on Payless.com and will hit stores nationwide next week (the original $20,000 version, designed by Chahan Minassian, appears on Parker several times throughout the new film).

And, revealed Field, Payless shoes can even be spotted on several actors in the movie, though not the four stars.
