Liberty to Host ‘Shoe Weekend’

Hot on the heels of its Manolo Blahnik pop-up shop, Liberty of London will host its first shoe weekend at the end of the month.

“We are adding American theater,” said Liberty managing director Ed Burstell, who joined the iconic London store from Bergdorf Goodman in 2008.

The footwear-themed weekend, set for Nov. 25-28, kicks off with a personal appearance by Nicholas Kirkwood, who will take customers’ orders on spring ’11 runway shoes he has produced for the likes of Rodarte, Erdem, Michael van der Ham, Louise Gray, Peter Pilotto and Roksanda Ilincic. “To me, Liberty is a very special store and it’s not just the architecture,” said Kirkwood, who will be giving away sketches of his runway shoes to those who purchase them.

On Saturday, Rupert Sanderson will be interviewed by British Vogue editor-at-large Fiona Golfar and will sign shoes. “Liberty is a great store and partner, that champions the brands that it sells,” said Sanderson.

Paris-based Raphael Young and Marc Hare of men’s shoe label Mr. Hare will also make appearances. T&F Slack Shoemakers will unveil its men’s footwear in exclusive colorways, specially made for the event, in the men’s department in the lower ground floor.

Also throughout the weekend, lessons will be offered on how to handle any high-heeled situation: disco dancing in sky-high styles, walking a catwalk in 6-inch platforms and hailing a taxi in stilettos. A team of podiatrists will also be on hand for complimentary reflexology treatments to those who book appointments at the Sole Spa, which debuts in-store at the end of the month.
