Retailers Sound Off on 2010

David Pearse, owner of Redman’s Shoes, Alliance, Neb.
“I’m cautiously optimistic about 2010. We’re going to freshen up our inventory, but we don’t want to overload. We’ve got to keep inventory, invoices and dollars where they belong.”

Robert Yeganeh, owner of Love My Shoes, Farmingdale, N.Y.
“I’m confident that 2010 will be better for us. We’re making a lot of adjustments to our infrastructure internally with new hires and new customer service policies, and we’re dropping vendors that are no longer needed. “

Asi Agajan, owner of Ripe, New York
“Looking ahead, I don’t expect much for January and February, but when the spring comes, if the weather is good and we can keep the door open at the stores and the vibe is great, then I’ll be very optimistic about spring. I didn’t buy conservatively, and the vendors had a lot of great spring product.”

Bill Lawson, owner of Shoe Inn, New York
“I have no idea how we’re going to do next year. I’m very concerned, as always. The economy has gotten a little stronger and hopefully the U.S. dollar will continue to get a little stronger. Consumer confidence is increasing to some degree, even though the unemployment rate is still quite high.”

David Hill, owner/president of Kids Sports World, St. Louis, Mo.
“We’re hoping just to stay even. We’re hoping that finally the economy is stabilized and that we can stay level and then start growing again in 2011 and 2012.”

Tamara Vladic, owner of Deliciouz, Walnut Creek, Calif.
“I really hope to continue on this upward trend for my store [and] do great numbers. … We’ve upped inventory [for 2010] by about 30 percent, added new brands and gone deeper into certain brands I really love [that have] worked for me, like Chie Mihara.”

Todd Kirssin, DMM for footwear at DTLR, Hanover, Md.
“[For spring ’10,] we’re high on Adidas, in the basics and Originals: the Superstar, the Samba, the Stan Smith. We’re also [bullish] on vulcanized product, especially from Polo, Levi and PF Flyers, with men’s and kids’. And we expect Creative Recreation to make a strong push for spring and summer — they have gorgeous vulcanized canvas product.”
