Selena Gomez’s star is on the rise.
The “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” singer has become a teen sensation thanks to her role as Alex Russo on the hit Disney Channel show “Wizards of Waverly Place.” Next month, Gomez will appear in her first major film, the Disney Channel’s “Princess Protection Program,” co-starring her real-life best friend and fellow Disney darling, Demi Lovato. In the film, 16-year-old Gomez portrays a tomboy who helps conceal Lovato’s royal identity by giving her style tips to make her pass as a normal teen — which meant the two got to do a little shoe swapping.
“I have to dress her down, and she tries to dress me up,” Gomez explained. “[Demi’s] character has never worn sneakers before, and I have her wearing Converse, while she tries to put me in heels. So it’s cool to see the characters switch up.”
Off-screen, Gomez’s personal style has had a similar transition from tomboy to trendsetter. “When I was younger, I was really into sneakers, white T-shirts and jeans,” said Gomez, a native of Grand Prairie, Texas, who now lives in Los Angeles. “But about a year-and-a-half ago, I started to love dressing up and finding really cute accessories.”
While she still likes donning Chucks and other comfy sneakers from time to time, Gomez has developed a passion for designer heels. She has yet to splurge on a pair, but revealed there is one designer she’s dying to wear. “I would feel gorgeous in Christian Louboutins,” she said.
Pairs owned: “My mom and I now wear the same shoe size, so my closet has doubled. [Together], we probably own more than 100 pairs. We always say how funny it is that we have 100 pairs of shoes and yet we always want to wear the same pair at the same time. But we usually find a happy medium.”
Brands: Aldo, BCBG, Betsey Johnson, Chinese Laundry, Converse, Gap, Nine West and Ugg, among others
Closet organization strategy: “I like to organize styles from casual to dressy. So I have all my flats and sneakers first, then wedges. The wedges merge into heels and the heels into half boots and then all my tall boots are on the bottom shelf of my closet.”
Favorite brands: “I really like BCBG — that’s my favorite line. I also like Nine West. And I probably own about 20 pairs of Converse. I love wearing them with shorts, capris and even dresses.”
Best random find: “At a vintage shop, I got these slouchy ankle boots for $12. They are so cute and I wear them all the time.”
Biggest splurge: “That would have to be my BCBG wedges. They’re black-and-gray leather with little stones around the wedge. I paid almost $300 for them, but they were a gift to myself, so I was excited to buy them.”
Favorite on-set look: “I’d love to ask [the wardrobe department] if I could borrow some of [my ‘Wizards’ character] Alex’s wedges. Alex has incredibly cool, funky wedges that we’ll put with cute leg warmers — it’s a very different style. And we’re taking more risks with her wardrobe for the new season. We’ve gone a little ‘Gossip Girl’ with fun socks and knee-highs.”
Favorite red-carpet shoe: “When I’m at an event, I don’t like to expose my feet, so I prefer to wear heels with a closed, round toe.”
Go-to weekend shoe: “Sandals or boots. I’m obsessed with suede boots at the moment.”
Most important shoe feature: “Comfort.”
Dream pair: “I try not to get excited about any one shoe because once I’m fixed on one, there’s no going back. But I would feel gorgeous in Christian Louboutins.”
Shopping profile: “I like to mix it up when I shop. I like going to Forever 21, Urban Outfitters and Target. I also love checking out thrift stores and vintage stores in Los Angeles. And my mom and I like to go to DSW to find really cute bargain shoes.”
Personal style: “It’s very original in that my style is close and personal to me. Whether I wear a necklace [pendant] with a music symbol that symbolizes my love for music, or a ring with a peace sign, it’s very personal.”
Do shoes make the outfit? “My outfits do depend on my shoes. I love that I can wear the same dress a thousand times, but if I change the shoes, it’s a different look.”
