In Brief: Charitable Events

Running for a Cause
Puma has built quite the roster for this year’s New York Marathon.
The Boston-based athletic company has teamed up with actor Edward Norton and three Maasai warriors to lead a group of 30 runners throughout the city’s five boroughs during race. The group, along with Puma, was created to support the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, a Kenya-based organization that supports the preservation of Maasai tribal lands and educational and health initiatives in the Maasai community.
“We’re totally thrilled to have Puma’s support,” Norton said in a press release. “Their commitments to African development make them a natural partner with MWCT’s work, and since we’re running for environmental conservation efforts, what could be better than having the puma on our team jersey?”
In an effort to raise money and awareness in the weeks leading up to the marathon, Puma — which also sponsors 11 soccer teams in Africa — has created a special edition “Maasai Marathon” T-shirt, which will be sold at select Puma stores and retail partners.
Caring Is Key
Heidi Klum and Michael Kors have stepped off the runway to do a little good.
The duo has paired up with Saks Fifth Avenue to promote breast cancer awareness for the department store’s annual Key to the Cure charity shopping event. This year’s limited edition T-shirt, designed by Kors and modeled by Klum in national marketing and public service announcements, retails for $40 at Saks and online, with 80 percent of proceeds from each sale going to local charities.
The New York-based department store chain has hosted the Key to the Cure event for 11 years, raising more than $32 million for breast cancer awareness in research since its inception. In addition to a $500,000 donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the partnering organization for Saks’ 2009 campaign, the department store has committed to donate 2 percent of sales from the Oct. 15-18 shopping event to women’s cancer organizations.
