Seven months into her new role as SVP and fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue, Roopal Patel is busy shaking things up. As she helps oversee the renovation of the department store’s historic Fifth Avenue flagship, as well as the opening of a new downtown location, Patel is tapping into the wealth of wisdom she’s learned from other female execs and mentors through the years.
Here, she shares some of that advice, from being versatile to thinking outside the box.
Biggest opportunity in my new role: “I am very excited about all the changes taking place at Saks Fifth Avenue. The Fifth Avenue renovation is underway, and we’re opening Saks Downtown in Brookfield Place in September. We are elevating our fashion message across all channels. It is a dynamic time in Saks’ history, and I am excited to be a key part of the evolution.”
Best advice I’ve received: “To be versatile and go with the flow. Sometimes you can get stuck in an idea, concept or place. You have to be open to the big picture and be ready to flip things in a second.”
Female mentors: “I had the honor to work for Candy Pratts Price during my time at Style.com and Linda Fargo during my time at Bergdorf Goodman. They are both creative and visual geniuses. Candy taught me to look at fashion through a different lens than I was used to. She could always see things before they happened. Linda taught me to embrace the creative space around me and see what is possible outside of the lines.”
