Nicole Miller is diving deeper into shoes. After re-entering the footwear category in spring ’14, the New York-based designer told Footwear News she will introduce platforms in bold colors and floral prints for the resort ’17 season — her first with new partner Eastman Footwear Corp. “We also updated several signature styles with Art Nouveau prints and are continuing with laser-cut styles,” said Miller. In addition, her label will add more weatherproof options to the mix: “Rain boots did really well for us last season, and I can’t wait to see what people think of the new styles.”
Overall, Miller said she was inspired by the “decorative elements of Art Nouveau, characterized by the juxtaposition of strong linear design and soft ornate florals.” To create a complete resort look, she paired the shoes with modern-day interpretations of 1940s ready-to-wear silhouettes — think high-waisted pieces, flowy knee-length dresses, A-line skirts and pleating techniques. Here, Miller shares her love for Rihanna’s bold sense of style and why ballet flats won’t make the cut in her collection.
