Get a bead on this new partnership. The Minnetonka Moccasin brand, best known for its suede leather mocs and fringe boots, has teamed up with Japanese bead artist Môko Kobayashi for an ongoing collaboration.
Kobayashi, who studied haute couture beading in Paris before starting her accessories brand Maison des Perles, typically creates brooches and pins featuring pop motifs of animals, people and French phrases. For the Minnetonka collection, she took inspiration from American nature and wild animals.
Her first series for Minnetonka features a howling wolf, with a star and crescent moon. The metallic beaded design appears on a classic moccasin slip-on, offered in three colors: black, tan and gray. The shoes are available now for $50 at major retailers including Zappos.com and Shoebuy.com.
But that’s just the beginning of this union. For the holiday season, Kobayashi created a beaded design of a reindeer, which comes on an array of seasonally colored moccasins, including tan, gray, red and navy. Also priced at $50, the limited-edition look will be available starting Oct. 17, exclusively on Minnetonka’s website.
And finally, for spring ’17, taking cues from the season’s light, bright feel, Kobayashi has decorated a series of mocs with a delicate feather motif.
Of the collaboration, Kobayashi said, “Minnetonka and I have one important thing in common: handcraftsmanship. I wanted to add brightness and fun to the moccasin so that every time you take a step, it makes you smile.”
In recent seasons, Minnetonka has unveiled a number of eye-catching collabs, including a blinged-out collection with hip retailer Opening Ceremony and a boho-chic series with designer Rebecca Minkoff.
