The charismatic 9-year-old, who made history in 2012 as the youngest actor ever to win a Screen Actors Guild Award for her breakout role as Lily Tucker-Pritchett, loves to kick around in casual, comfy shoes such as sneakers and flip-flops. One of her favorite brands is Plae, whose shoes feature colorful, interchangeable straps, allowing kids to customize their look.
Last week, Aubrey and her comedian-mom, Amy Anderson, teamed with the brand to host its first runway show at San Francisco’s historic Fort Mason Center. The event also featured aerial and hip-hop performances, as well as live art by Plae’s artist in residence, Oliver Black.
Footwear News caught up with Aubrey, who shared the scoop on her on-set shoe wardrobe, red-carpet style and celebrity role models.
Number of pairs owned: “Hmmm … kind of a lot! Probably more than 10 pairs, but my feet grew really fast this year, so some might not even fit me anymore.”
Favorite footwear brands: “I love Plae. They make the most comfortable shoes. I wear my Plae Noel boots to the farm when I ride horses. Flip-flops are cool. I have ones from Sanuk that are made from old yoga mats. I love being barefoot, too.”
Personal style: “I like stuff that is pretty, but I can also be a tomboy sometimes. I mean, my favorite pants are sweatpants. I like being comfortable.”
Go-to styles for special events: “I love tall boots or sandals. I have really wide feet, so fancy dress shoes usually don’t fit me.”
Most comfortable pair for long days on the set: “My ‘Modern Family’ character, Lily, wears a lot of Plae shoes. The Emme [Mary Jane sneaker] is probably my favorite pair.”
On my wish list: “I can’t wait to be old enough to wear heels — even though my mom says they hurt your feet.”
If I could raid Lily’s wardrobe, I’d take: “Definitely the Plae Emmes.”
Celebrity fashion idol: “I think Sofia Vergara is so beautiful and fancy. She always looks so pretty, and she is an amazing businesswoman. Plus, she has the coolest shoes.”
Favorite shopping haunts: “I actually hate shopping. But right now, I am working with [British brand] Mini Boden, and I love their stuff. They make so many cute outfits, and everything’s really comfortable.”
