Candie’s is having a “modern” moment with its new creative director and brand ambassador, actress Sarah Hyland. The label, a division of New York-based Iconix Brand Group Inc., tapped the “Modern Family” star and fashion it-girl in April to help lead Candie’s into a new era with more updated styling and a refreshed aesthetic.

“I’ve loved doing the styling, designing and photo shoots and attending product meetings and seeing the finished product,” Hyland told Footwear News earlier this month. Her first assignment for the brand was to star in its fall campaign, which was unveiled in June. She has also been busy shaping the spring ’17 footwear and apparel collection — the first to benefit from her design input.

As for what to expect from Candie’s in the coming seasons, Hyland was pretty tight-lipped. “It’s been a huge brainstorm and collaboration [with the Candie’s team]. It’s so invigorating,” she said, citing some retro themes as personal inspiration. “I’m inspired by the 1990s, and I would love to go back in time.” Here, the actress reveals a few more of her favorite things.

Dream Vacation Spot: “Somewhere tropical [where I can lie] in a hammock over water. I would even like to hike to find a hidden waterfall. I love adventure, but I love relaxing just as much.”

Three Things In My Bag, Always: “Phone, keys, wallet — the essentials.”

Must-See Tourist Attraction in Los Angeles: “The Hollywood Bowl.”

Favorite Eateries In NYC: “Bleecker Street Pizza. But I also love Benny’s Burritos, Central Park, Murray’s Bagels: anything that includes a park and food.”

Music on Repeat Right Now: “Alessia Cara is my spirit animal. Her voice is impeccable, and her words are everything I want to say but don’t know how to.”

Ideal Night Off: “Pizza and Netflix. My entire life is a Netflix-and-chill moment.”
